"I’ve been doing yoga for about 5 weeks now to improve my general flexibility, strength and muscular awareness. After seeing a massage therapist about an underlying issue I was told to definitely keep up with doing yoga.
On my second appointment with the massage therapist, I was told that I had nowhere near as much tension as before and that yoga is definitely the reason for that.

Sian’s sessions are balanced, well structured and very suitable for beginners, with adaptations being offered to pretty much every stretch if you want to make it easier or harder for yourself. The sessions I take part in are with my team from work, with a vast range of abilities, and we always come away feeling like we’ve had a great session."
"I am so grateful for all your time put into our classes.
Designing a safe, enjoyable routine for me has massively improved my battle against stiff muscles from my spine damage.
If I stop doing it for a few weeks I'm in a bad way again and the regular pain is worse".

How long have you been practising yoga?
I've always been a physically active person. Loved running with my dogs daily, working my allotment, being an active mother and running my own business. Four years ago a spine injury I incurred as a child progressed and out of the blue I lost the use of my left leg, hip, and core. Which instantly changed my life. I started looking for a yoga instructor who would be patient with my restrictions and understand my desire to improve my physical situation. I tried a couple of classes but manually moving my left leg into positions slowed down the class and I felt embarrassed. I decided to look for a personal yoga instructor and found Sian at Aurora Beauty and Wellness over a year ago.
Why did you start doing yoga?
It took the doctors a couple of years to figure out the cause of my sudden onset of mobility restrictions. At first they thought I had had a stroke, then investigated neurological problems. No one knew what do with me really. No one could offer me valid ways to improve my mobility. I spent the first year of testing staring at the unresponsive parts of my body and demanding in my head that they move. After each time I would then manually move that body part. I did this daily. I slowly got twitches which progressed to some movement. Doctors discovered my spine was in poor shape. Amongst other things, one of the 3 disc bulges I have had since I was a child, had displaced my main left nerve root. The problems in my lower spine had caused severe inflammation in my thoracic spine { where your shoulder blades are}. I was told this would be a vicious cycle for life. The pain and muscle stiffness, the restricted mobility, the breathing issues, the weakness, muscle spasms, digestive issues, all caused by my spine but could not be fixed by surgery. I was told my age { I was 34 when this happened} and my prior physical strength were the only reasons I had managed to regain feeling. I had three different sets of injections into my spine to reduce pain and inflammation. The doctors put me on strong medications to try help with the muscle spasms and stiffness. Which I struggled to tolerate. I read great things about yoga helping with decompressing the spine. Something I very much needed. I wanted to learn a routine I could do for life to regularly stretch my spine and fight back against my mobility restrictions.
How does yoga help you day to day?
When Sian first started to teach me the routine she designed for me I had to manually move my left leg into certain positions. I was very slow, stiff and struggling to breathe. My range of movement was very restricted and painful. If I wanted to look left I had to move my whole body. If I wanted to walk up the stairs I had to lift my left leg up by holding both hands on the bannister and pulling upwards with my shoulder. I had to sit on the yoga mat with spine cushions.
After each session I could feel a slight more range in my movement. Sian was extremely patient and encouraging with me. She told me she hadn't done a yoga lesson as slow as mine before but also hadn't worked with someone as restricted as I was! But I didn't know that until she said it, which shows how professional she was. Some poses we tried even woke up muscles in my left thigh and core that had refused to wake up for 3 years.
A year later and the routine Sian taught me has massively reduced the size of the circle of muscle stiffness and pain I get from moving around. Most of the time I can lift my left leg up the stairs with my left leg muscles, most of the time I can turn my head to look left or right with out turning my whole body, I can sit on my yoga mat with out spine cushions. I know which poses are safe to do on my bad days to help loosen my spine back up and reduce my pain. I have poses to help improve my strength on my better days.
What is your ultimate goal with yoga?
My doctors ask me this one sometimes and I always say ' I want to be running again, but I would accept being able to walk my dogs around the block without any aids.' Some doctors laugh some look at me sternly. I know running is never going to be a reality but I do desire to rebuild my core strength so that I can walk more than a few metres each day. So I can sit in chairs without neck and arm support. Sian doesn't laugh or look at me sternly. Sian has the same believe as I that our bodies and brains are amazing and that determination and healthy living can win so many battles! It might take me years it might never happen but yoga is definitely helping me take the first tiny step towards my dream of physical independence again. Alongside chasing my dream, yoga has improved my breathing, my range of movement and mental health.
